ST. ANDREW’S FAMILY SHELTER

Volunteer with other parishioners from St. Peter!

St. Andrew’s Family Shelter is available to families with minor children in Washington County and families with children who attend school in the Forest Lake School District #831. Ramsey County families with children going to school in the White Bear Lake district #624 and N. St. Paul/Maplewood/Oakdale district #622 are also eligible. They provide off-site shelter at two locations in Washington County with ongoing supportive case management with the goal of stable housing for the family.

If you are a single in Washington County seeking shelter, please call Washington County HOST Team at (651) 430-6433. Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

Please complete the following before signing up to be at the house to serve a meal, or do an overnight:

1. View SAFE Boundaries Video and inform Kathy Garry of the date viewed.

2. Complete the St. Andrew’s Family Shelter Volunteer Application*

3. Complete the “Essential 3”, through Virtus website: https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/.

All 3 are completed online in about 2 hours, and need to be renewed every 3 years. Please contact Bob Burns in the Parish Office at (651) 982-2227 if you need help with this.

THE SHELTER IS FULL OF FAMILIES!

All families are grateful for the shelter and meals provided, as they work towards their goal of getting into their own place to call home!

  • Hugo's Family Shelter can house up to 5 families

  • Provides families a safe place to call their own

  • Most of the parents are employed

  • About 70% are single mothers

  • Volunteers are blessed by their time spent with the families.

  • St. Andrew's Family Shelter depends on support from 13 other churches and is looking for others. The member churches provide hundreds of volunteers to staff the shelter.

Volunteers are needed! Please make a space in your calendar to volunteer in some way at St. Andrew's Family Shelter (SAFS) in Hugo, MN.

Volunteers are needed to: 

  • Provide an evening meal

  • Do light meal prep and serve the meal (5:00-7:30 pm)

  • Fill an overnight shift (7:00 pm-9:00 am) (There is a private bedroom, with a full bathroom, for overnight volunteers to sleep in.)

  • Provide some needed staples like milk, eggs, bread, lunch items, and breakfast items

St. Peter's Available Volunteer Weeks:

  • Sep 24 - Sep 30

  • Nov 26 - Dec 2

Meal Suggestions: 

  • Homemade and brought warm, ready to serve

  • Frozen and ready to prepare

  • Raw Ingredient for staff to prepare (Hamburger, taco shells, cheese, tomatoes, head of lettuce, etc.) (pasta, sauce, bread, butter, or garlic powder)

  • Restaurant meals: KFC, Chow-mein etc 

  • Dessert

  • Fixings- (pasta, sauces, lettuce, veggies dressing etc. bread, lunch meats)

  • Additional Needs: Beverages: 2% milk, OJ

  • Lunches: Maybe a couple loaves of bread and lunch meats (small mayo & mustard) PB&J fixings; Mac and cheese; Family size cans of soup, tortillas, sliced cheese for grilled cheese or quesadillas

Breakfast Suggestions:    

  • Bagels, Butter, Cream cheese, boxes of cereal, Milk, Poptarts, Breakfast bars, Peanut butter, Dried fruit, Yogurt, and/or Coffee

Future weeks for volunteering at the St. Andrew's Family Shelter in Hugo will be posted here as they are set. Check your calendar and find a time that works best for you! Use the links above to sign-up for volunteering each week!

If you are not signing up for an overnight shift because you need to leave before  9:15 am (the end of the overnight shift), please let Kathy Garry know. We can split the shift into 2 parts and get someone to cover the early morning so you can get to work on time.
