Exploring the faith
with their senses…
…meeting Jesus
in their hearts
What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd?
Based on Montessori methods, it is a way of accompanying children as they experience different aspects of our Catholic faith. The heart of the catechesis for children under six revolves around the Parable of the Good Shepherd. Children prayerfully explore materials designed to help them encounter the Good Shepherd. See photos for some examples of the materials they encounter. He calls us by name and His sheep listen to His voice. The children ponder as they work with the stories from the Scriptures about the Good Shepherd, The birth of Jesus, and the Parables of the Kingdom.
In addition, children will experience the various articles used on the altar, many important gestures the priest uses, and grow in appreciation of Jesus truly present in the Eucharist.
Recognizing that God and the child have a unique relationship with one another, the adult assists in the growth of that relationship.
It is amazing to see the youngest and busiest of our church embracing Scripture, the Eucharist, and even the peaceful atmosphere. They quickly grow to know that Jesus is next to them while they interact with the materials in the Atrium and that the voice of the Shepherd calls them.
